Help! The edge is tiny on my theme how do I hem it?

•February 10, 2009 • Leave a Comment

When the fabric came back from the printers I realised that the themes were printed very close together which meant a little extra creativity was needed to hem the edges. But it’s a simple and easy fix so here’s how you do it:

  1. zig-zag the edges first, this helps prevent the fraying and makes it so you only need a small edge to turn under
  2. Iron the edge when you fold it over using about 1/4 inch. This makes it easier to do a straight line hem with just a little bit of fabric and still lives a nice black border on the front.
  3. Hem the folded edge and you’re done!

And as is mentioned in the no-sew tutorial before this, a 1/4 or 8mm dowel works best.

And here is the finished product:

If you’ve got a photo you want to share, feel free to add a link in the comments. Here is one that I found that turned out adorable by “Under my Umbrella” way to go UMU!

Value Lanterns :: Freebie

•February 1, 2009 • 1 Comment

I really wasn’t sure what to call this freebie, but it’s a paper triangle that you put over a little electric tea candle, to make the paper glow. Emphasis on “electric” candle here. There is one for each value, Divine Nature is pictured above.

We are using this for New Beginnings. Each girl carries her candle to the front of the room, talks about her value and then puts the value lantern over her candle, so each value lights up as they are talked about.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Print out *this paper lanterns file* with each of the 8 values (thin, stiff paper is best such as printable vellum, I used cheap copy paper in the photo because that’s all I had, cardstock works too but you need stronger lights).
  2. Punch out the holes with a pen over a spongy surface (I used an old mousepad).
  3. Fold them on the dotted lines into a triangle, tape the back edges together (or not).
  4. Put it over your no-flame light source and now you have a beautiful set of value lanterns in just 30 minutes from start to finish (with the help of a couple Young Women)!

And of course, these lanterns match the YW Value Banners in my etsy shop which keeps this blog going. Enjoy your freebie and please share photos if you use them, I love to hear back from you and see what you create.

Young Women Opening Exercises :: Freebie!

•January 25, 2009 • 8 Comments

In my Young Womens room we’ve got a basket of these cards. I just hand a card to the girl conducting that day and she makes the assignments…um I mean well in advance of the day. 😉 It makes getting started just a little more organised.

Here is a sheet of opening exercise cards that you can print out, cut and have on hand to make organising the start of Young Womens a snap. Works great in black and white too, because most of us would just use the copier.

I realise not everyone would have a closing prayer or song all together, so just use a little white-out on it before you copy them and you’ve got extra room for announcements. Just drag and drop to your desktop and print away!

I ask 2 things if you use these:

  1. Leave a comment and say where you’re from! It’s fun to see who is using these.
  2. Respect the copyright terms, as you usually do.

Just click on the image below to enlarge and then right click (save image as…). Fits on American and European sized paper. Enjoy!
